Overview
Selection of diabetes medications continues to be a conundrum for many providers uncomfortable with diabetes management. This lecture will focus on how to make those decisions based on evidence-based practice and current guidelines from the American Diabetes Association. Knowledge of updates throughout the year is also important as the American Diabetes Association may make several updates throughout the year based on best-practice and optimal outcomes. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is paramount in diabetes care, including Social Determinants of Health.
Each participant in this lecture will be given information of how to obtain free teaching materials for his/her patient population, including forms and web sites for medication approval as well as occupational forms for allowing insulin use for patients whose professions may discriminate. Also to be included in this lecture is how to specifically calculate medication dosages in oral and injectable agents to get to targeted glycemic goals. This presentation will contain evidence of multi-disciplinary systematic reviews, meta-analysis, and controlled cohort studies in cardiology and nephrology which support optimal blood sugar control for best practice.
Speakers
Ms. Deck graduated with a nursing diploma, then a BSN, a master’s degree from Ball State University as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Valparaiso University. She began a hospital outpatient diabetes program in 1986 and became a certified diabetes educator in 1989. Ms. Deck has been a member of the Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists and earned board certification in Advanced Diabetes Management. She is a member of Kappa Sigma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. She is currently practicing internal medicine in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
